Tinubu Visits Katsina, Donates N50m to Victims of Market Inferno

By Francis Sardauna

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has donated N50 million to victims of Katsina Central Market fire incident and called for the reopening of the market to enable traders resume commercial activities.

The former Lagos State governor, who announced the donation while addressing the affected traders at the ravaged market Wednesday, said he would continue to support the state government and the traders to rebuild the affected shops.

Tinubu, who was accompanied to the scene by Governor Aminu Bello Masari; his Deputy, Mannir Yakubu and the Secretary to the State Government, Mustapha Inuwa, expressed shock over the fire disaster.

He said the immediate reopening of the market would enable the victims to ascertain the number of properties lost and kickstart their means of livelihoods.

Why Obasanjo May Have No Option Than To Support Tinubu For 2023 Presidency

'I have dedicated the rest of my life to global peace, service to humanity'- Obasanjo

When I heard those words from General Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo my mind raced to the 2023 presidential elections and what role Obasanjo may likely play before his final exit from the political scene.

Baba Iyabo has proven to be one of the most patriotic Nigerian ever, his love for the unity of the country has never been in doubt from day one, his days in the Military was an attestation to his selfless service to the country.

Obasanjo's political life has its own slips and many may accuse him of one who never supported the Yoruba agenda, while some others say he's a very self-centred individual.

As a nationalist Obasanjo has always played a vital role in the administration of the country.

From recent events, the 2023 presidential elections would factor in so many interests aside from the usual zoning, religion, power separation etc.

The present tension ongoing in the country as regards insecurity, ethnic uprising and secessionist threats must be factored in the equation in deciding who takes over from President Buhari.

Competency, ability to manage a crisis, political maturity, required diplomatic experience, empathy with the Nation and a sound economical knowledge laced with creativity and productivity are basic requisite if we must get it right as a Nation in 2023.

Today the South-West classifies Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a living legend in Yoruba land because of his leadership qualities, they see him as a rallying point for the region and the Nation at large.

His charismatic personality and progressive ideas are added advantages. No doubt Obasanjo would find Tinubu's choice as a replacement to Buhari a national task and like his patriotism which has been constant as the Northern Star the former President may have no option other than to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2023 presidency.

Now from my personal forecast, Obasanjo would follow his predictable route.

Obasanjo kicked against Atiku's aspiration in 2007 and brought in Yar'Adua and Goodluck Jonathan.

When the Yar'Adua's administration was adrift due to the illness of Yar'Adua, Obasanjo was at the forefront of Goodluck Jonathan taking over, and when he was to contest Obasanjo was the champion of his candidacy in 2011.

In 2015 Obasanjo tore his party card(PDP) and supported Buhari against the same Goodluck Jonathan.

2019 Obasanjo was dissatisfied with Buhari's administration and threw his weight behind Atiku's candidacy. the same Atiku he fought endlessly.

Certainly, Obasanjo is not immune from the "you win some and you lose some diagnostic" as the Egba General has experienced his own share of political defeat, but be that as it may, his support and endorsement holds big authority in whatever context you wish to anchor your debate on.

So if we follow the trajectory of Obasanjo's support then you might have to agree with me that Uncle Sege this time around may have no option than to support the former Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu who happens to be a one time political FOE.

Tinubu today happens to be the focal point for the South-West presidency and this may be the last act of patriotism Chief Olusegun  Obasanjo may undertake before he finally bows out fully from the political scene to a full-time retirement at Otta.

Meanwhile the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III  visited the National Leader of the All Progressives Party (APC); Bola Ahmed Tinubu at his Bourdillon residence in Lagos on Saturday.

Aside from this visit, the South-West monarchs are at the forefront of Tinubu's presidency.

COVID-19: SENATOR ADEYEMI SPEAKING FOR HIMSELF

- ‘We Should Value Our People’s Lives Above Inordinate Political Ambitions’

Covid-19 is real and contrary to Senator Smart Adeyemi's assertions, not all federal legislators from Kogi state subscribe to the idea of treating the global pandemic with levity, Honourable Teejay Yusuf has said.

Reacting to newspaper reports of  Senator Adeyemi's claim that Kogi state legislators in the National Assembly are solidly behind the governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who has been insistent that there is no COVID-19 in the state, Honourable Teejay Yusuf stressed that it is extremely reckless to nudge citizens into further indifference and carelessness over Covid-19.

“As politicians representing the people, we should not be blindfolded by inordinate political ambition to deny that a global pandemic that has caused many deaths in Saudi Arabia, Israel, America, Nigeria and other parts of the world is non-existent.

“The people of Kogi state individually and collectively have better knowledge and wisdom than some politicians credit them for but I tell you, without being genuinely faithful to God and the people being represented, misplaced high expectations run the risk of coming to nought,” Honourable Teejay Yusuf stated.

In his statement, Honourable Yusuf who represents Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal constituency in Kogi state asserted that while Senator Smart Adeyemi reserves every right to speak for himself, it is “rather too far-fetched” for him to dare speak for every Senator and member of the House of Representatives from Kogi state when no prior discussion, meeting or resolution on the subject exists.

“Senator Adeyemi obviously lacks any justification for saying that all of us are not sure we’ll take the Covid-19 vaccine; at least, he does not speak for me on this

“Beyond all this, every Nigerian must ponder why members of the ruling APC are so viciously opposed to one another as if they have four or five opposition parties within their party but worse still, they pull no punches when it comes to sabotaging Nigeria or even, one another from within

“This becomes even more glaring when President Muhammadu Buhari, his ministers, the highly-placed members of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 are on one side, saying something to 200 million Nigerians while our dear Senator Smart Adeyemi and his co-travellers are on the other side, telling whoever cares to listen that it is all a lie.

“Altogether, the ruling APC has become a disaster unto itself in far worse ramifications than a house divided against itself; nonetheless, I shall endeavour to support global efforts and that of President Buhari’s administration towards curbing this global pandemic over which some APC figures appear so determined to lull citizens to sleep,” Honourable Teejay Yusuf stated.

Don't allow sentiments to influence your decision, make the ticket open for all zones, BDSM UK counsel APC on zoning.

Members of the All Progressives Congress resident in the United Kingdom and supporters of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state's Presidential ambition, under the auspices of BELLO DIASPORA SUPPORT MOVEMENT have advised the ruling party to allow sound arguments rather than sentiments as are currently canvassed guide her in taking decisions on zoning and power sharing ahead of the 2023 Presidential elections, saying that it is important to critically conduct a SWOT analysis of the party's fortune and chances in the coming election year.

The group's International Cordinator and respected diaspora APC supporter Amb. Kolawole Akinmosun stated this during a media chat with selected journalists at his Catford Broadway, London office in the United Kingdom on Saturday after a general Congress of the group where it was unanimously adopted that the group being a voice in the party should support an open contest for all zone. Amb Akinmosun said the party must deliberately allow and promote a mass participatory process, not one that seclude, ostracise or annihilate potential candidates in the name of zoning. He argued that Nigeria has come of age politically to still hang on a practice that doesn't allow for fair contest across the country, he says their declaration is on the heels of the comment by certain elected office holders under the party, including some Governors.

The APC stalwart says the decision of the UK group is in the best interest of the country and the party, he further said zoning should not be the only concern of true patriots, he wondered why attention and focus is not on the age of the person,  unity of the nation,  Security and protection of territorial integrity of Nigeria, national reorientation and religious harmony.

Amb Akinmosun says these four key factors as mentioned have proven sufficiently to be the major bane of our national development

*As a young man who was born in the southwest, had basic education in the Southwest, had university education in the North and now living in the United Kingdom, I'm adequately empowered and well informed and travelled enough to be able to convincingly say that once youths are enthroned, unity provided through unbiased leadership, religious disaffection sent away through leadership and security decisively tackled through political will, then Nigeria will experience unimaginable development, unprecedented progress and compete with the hitherto developed nation. I am therefore confident to state without equivocation that audacity, frankness and turf leadership are the characters that must be seen in the next President of Nigeria, when you exermine the current leaders in Nigeria, you will see that only Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state is equipped with such, hence the reason we held an international press conference to declare for him a few months ago* Amb Akinmosun says

He says development doesn't come from the most brilliant, unity doesn't come through the soft heart and security doesn't come from the best professional but a leader that is decisive, frank, audacious, Liberal and possess ability to stick by his decisions. Amb Akinmosun further said that the group has scheduled a visit to Nigeria on a courtesy visit to the National Caretaker Committee in April, 2021

Call for stakeholders meeting on herder's crisis, Tinubu admonishes Buhari

The herder-farmer dispute has taken on acute and violent dimensions. It has cost too many innocent lives while destroying the property and livelihoods of many others. It has also aggravated ethnic sentiment and political tension. Despite the efforts of some of those in positions of high responsibility and public trust, the crisis has not significantly abated. Sadly, others who should know better have incited matters by tossing about hate-tainted statements that fall dangerously short of the leadership these people claim to provide. We all must get hold of our better selves to treat this matter with the sobriety it requires.

Because of the violence that has ensued and the fretful consequences of such violence if left unabated, we must move in unison but decisively to end the spiral of death and destruction. Only when the violence and the illogic of it are halted can logic and reason prevail. Until the violence is rolled back, we cannot resolve the deep problems that underlie this conflict. We will neither be able to uplift the farmer from his impoverished toil nor move the herder toward the historic transformation which he must make.

Yet, as vital as security is to the resolution of this matter, we must realize security measures alone will not suffice. Enhanced security may be the necessary first step, but it cannot be the only step. Nor do we resolve this by hitching ourselves to emotional, one-dimensional answers. More to the point, those who cast this as exclusively a matter of ethnic confrontation are mistaken. This is no time for reckless chauvinism of any kind, on either side of this dispute. This matter is not ethnic in factual origin or actual causation although in the minds and hearts of too many it has become ethnic in recrimination and impulsive action.

There have been sporadic disputes in the past but this one is more severe. The reasons for the greater violence of this current dispute are myriad. Economic hardship and its resultant dislocation, proliferation of weapons, generalized increase in criminality, and weakening of social institutions all play a role. Desertification, increased severity and length of the dry season, diminution of water resources, impairment of land fertility and population growth also contribute in no small measure. Thus, any durable solution must get at most, if not all, of these issues.

Farmers have a right to farm their land unmolested. Herders have a right to raise their livestock without undue interference. However, when conflict between these groups arises to such an extent, we must set forth clear principles and policies to remove the tension, in order to allow both to proceed toward their stated goals and to live in harmony and according to their respective rights. Just as I cannot go into your house and take your shirt because I do not have one of like colour, no one can destroy the crops of a farmer or seize the cattle of a herder simply because such destruction sates their anger or their selfish, short-term interests. If such a condition were to hold, then all would turn into chaos; all would be in jeopardy of being lost. To destroy the crops or seize the property of the innocent farmer or herder is nothing if not an act of criminality.

Here, I must state two fundamental realities. One has been previously mentioned by me and others as part of the solution. The other reality is hardly discussed.

First, the situation of the herder is becoming untenable. Their nomadic ways fall increasingly in conflict with the dictates of modern society. This way of life is centuries old and steeped in tradition. We can never condone or accept violence as a valid response to any hardship. However, we all must recognize and understand the sense of dislocation caused by the sudden passing of such a longstanding social institution.

I mention their dislocation not to excuse violence and other excesses. I raise it to underscore that we must realize the true complexity of this crisis. What is happening has been terrible, but it is not due to any intrinsic evil in either the herder or the farmer. The calamity now being faced is borne of situational exigencies. It is but the tragic outcome when often desperate, alienated people are left too long unattended and when their understanding of the modern socio-economic and environmental forces affecting the very terms of their existence is incomplete. An ethnically fuelled response will be to vociferously defend the nomadic way believing this tack will somehow protect the herder and cast the speaker as an ethnic champion. However, careless words cannot shield the herder from relentless reality. Such talk will only delude him into believing that he can somehow escape the inevitable. We do both herder and farmer grave injustice by allowing the herder to continue as he is – fighting a losing battle against modernity and climate change. In that fight, desperation causes him to flail and fight the farmer, who too is a victim of these impersonal forces.

Second, to help the herder and leave the farmer unattended is unfair and will only trigger a resentment that tracks already heated ethnic fault lines. The times have also been perilous for the hardscrabble farmer. He needs help to survive and to be more productive in ways that increases national food security.  Farm productivity and incomes must be enhanced. Soil enrichment, better irrigation and water retention as well as provision of better rural roads, equipment and access to modern machinery are required to lift him above bare subsistence.

Both innocent and law-abiding farmer and herder need to be recompensed for the losses they have suffered. Both need further assistance to break the current cycle of violence and poverty. In short, the continued progressive reform of many of our rural socio-economic relationships is called for.

Based on these strategic observations, I recommend the federal government convene a meeting of state governors, senior security officials, herder and farmer representatives, along with traditional rulers and religious leaders. The purpose of this meeting would be to hammer out a set of working principles to resolve the crisis.

After this meeting, governors of each state should convene follow-up meetings in their states to refine and add flesh to the universal principles by adjusting them to the particular circumstances of their states. In addition to religious and traditional leaders and local farmer and herder representatives, these meetings shall include the state’s best security minds along with experts in agriculture (livestock and farming), land use and water management to draw specific plans for their states.

To accomplish this goal, wise policy must include the following elements:

1. Maintain reasonable and effective law enforcement presence in affected areas. The proposed reform of the Nigerian law enforcement apparatus towards state and community policing can help in this regard. The legislative and administrative measures required to make this a reality should be expedited. In addition to alleviating the present farmer-herder crisis, this reform will also bolster efforts against the banditry, kidnapping and robbery plaguing communities across the country. Governments need to employ new technology and equipment to enhance the information gathering/surveillance and response capabilities of law enforcement.

2. Help the herders’ transition to more sedentary but more profitable methods of cattle-rearing. Unoccupied public land can be fenced into grazing areas or ranches and leased to herders on a very low-cost, nominal basis. The leasing is not intended to penalize herders.  Rather, the nominal fee is intended to ensure the herders are invested in the project and incentivized (by reason of their investment) to use the land provided. This aspect will also mitigate any resentment over herders being given land for free. Government, in turn, being a responsible lessor, must help with supplemental feed and water in these areas. This will enable herders to better maintain and care for their livestock thus enhancing their incomes. Herders can augment income by becoming suppliers to the leather goods industry. Additionally, herders can also develop a more symbiotic relationship with farmers by, for example, trading animal compost to the farmer in exchange for animal feed.

3. Assist farmers increase productivity by supporting or providing subvention for their acquisition of fertilizer, equipment and machinery and, also, by establishing commodity boards to guarantee minimum prices for important crops. In the medium to long term, resources must be dedicated to establishing better irrigation and water catchment systems to further improve farm productivity and mitigate the dire impact of flood and drought cycles brought about by extreme climatic conditions.

4. Establish a permanent panel in each state as a forum for farmers, herders, security officials and senior state officials to discuss their concerns, mitigate contention and identify trouble and douse it before it erupts.

We are a populous nation of diverse ethnic groups. We are a people of potential richness, yet to escape present poverty. We have resources but not wealth. Often, our words speak of hope and fear in the same breath. While we all hope and strive for the best, many fear that there is not enough of what is needed to go around and that they will be left out. In such a situation, harsh competition and contest are fated to occur. In the unfolding of this social dynamic, one group of actors has been pitted against another over dwindling water and fertile ground. The confrontation has resulted in the needless loss of life and destruction of property. If left to itself, this situation may spread and threaten the progress of the nation. It could call into proximate question the utility of the social compact that holds government and governed in positive bond, one to the other. We have a decision to make. Do we attempt the hard things that decency requires of us to right the situation? Or do we allow ourselves to be slave to short term motives that appeal to base instinct that  run afoul of the democratic principles upon which this republic is founded and for which so many have already sacrificed so much? In the question itself, lies the answer.

Funds meant for arms purchase ‘missing’ under Buratai, other service chiefs — NSA

The National Security Adviser, NSA Babagana Monguno, has revealed that funds given to former service chiefs for arms purchase not be traced.

On January 26, President Muhammadu Buhari removed the service chiefs in persons of  the Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

The president had immediately appointed their replacements in persons of Major-General Leo Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral A. Z. Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao, Chief of Air Staff.

But in an interview with the BBC Hausa on Friday morning, the NSA said neither the money approved by Mr Buhari for arm purchase nor arms was met on ground when the new service chiefs assumed office.

Asked why the government is foot-dragging on fight against banditry, Mr Monguno said the president had done his best by approving huge amount of money for arm purchase but the equipment was not forthcoming.

“Now that he (President Buhari) has brought new people (service chiefs), hopely they will device some ways… I’m not saying the former service chiefs diverted the money, but the money is missing. We don’t know how, and nobody knows for now,” he said.

Asked whether the matter is investigated to trace the funds or the military hardwares, the NSA said the president would investigate the matter.“The President will surely probe this matter. As we speak, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum too is also wondering where all the money went. I can assure you the president takes issues of this nature serious“The fact is that preliminary investigation showed the funds are missing and the equipment is nowhere to be found.

“When the new service chiefs assumed office, they also said they did see anything on ground,” said the NSA.

2023 In Focus: Youth Calls On Abayomi Bello, Makes Passionate Appeal

Concerned Youth group under the auspice of Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Youth Vanguard has made a passionate appeal to Abayomi Bello to come rescue them from uneven and unfelt representation at the Federal House of Representatives, as Member Representing Kabba-Bunu/ Ijumu Federal Constituency come 2023.

According to the leader of the group Comrade Solomon Adebowale, he said there has become an urgent need for the people Kabba-Bunu Ijumu Federal Constituency to send a befitting figure on what he described as a "rescue mission of the Constituency" at the green Chamber of the National Assembly.

"We have had enough of misrepresentation at the green Chamber and it will not be right if we as youths fail to retract our steps by fishing out the best individual to represent us and further bring to us the purpose for the existence of democracy; its dividends."

As a group concerned with the growth and development of our Constituency, we have found it proper and fit to make a passionate appeal to the person of Hon. Abayomi Bello to come serve as our rescuer. We call on him to stand in as our resolved choice and become a voice to speak for us come 2023 as Member Representing Kabba-Bunu Ijumu Federal Constituency.

Adebowale further revealed that the purpose for resolving on the person of Abayomi Bello is not far from his continuous show of love and support to the people Particularly to the Women and  Youths in the Constituency.

"Abayomi has remained consistent in his humanitarian activities to us, he has remained faithful in terms of provision of necessary social and infrastructural projects that has been aiding the growth and development of our people even as an individual without any form of government support."

We have come to realize that one who has shown unbeatable legacies with respect to human resource development can be trusted with the responsibility of championing a course for the people at the Green Chamber of the National Assembly as a representative of our Constituency. Hence, the need to call on him to show interest and enjoy our mandate becomes very necessary.

2023: Kogi APC Members Berate Gov Bello Over Anti-Party Activities

Threatens suspension of Governor from party

Some members of the Kogi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the auspices of Concerned APC Members,  have berated State Governor, Yahaya Bello, over what they called his "blinded ambition" to contest for the office of the President in 2023.

The group said Bello's new found friends and recent utterances in order to actualise his so-called presidential ambition were at the detriment of the ruling APC.

Leader of the concerned APC members, Dr. Yakubu Haruna Ugwolawo, with APC revalidation number: KG/KFU/14/08832, at a press conference, described Governor Bello's recent activities on the pretext of contesting for the presidency as "reckless and insensitive".

"I address you today as the leader of the Concerned Members of Kogi State APC on the reckless and insensitive activities of our governor, Yahaya Bello, who is the leader of our party in Kogi State, over his serial disrespectful attitude and activities toward the Federal Government of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, governors of our great party and eminent leaders of our great party.

"The governor today as put no one in doubt about his treacherous behaviour and betrayal tendency. Today, as can be seen as a result of his desperate and ill-advised presidential ambition, he has abandoned his benefactor, the number one leader of our party, President Muhammadu Buhari, by courting and associating with Baba's sworn enemies and opponents," he said.

He added that Governor Bello has openly shifted his allegiance to the sworn enemies of  President Buhari and the APC all in an attempt to achieve his 2023 ambition.

"In the last 16 years, there was no any negative and derogatory adjective found in the dictionary that Femi Fani-Kayode did not used to insult our dear President including members of his immediate family. In fact, FFK did that on weekly basis. It's the same man that Governor Yahaya Bello has approached to chair his presidential campaign media team. This  signals his abandonment of the political relationship between him and President Buhari.

"Governor Yahaya Bello has put his delusional interest ahead of any other person including our president and the party, on which platform he became governor. His shenanigans didn't stop at FFK. Only last week he visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is another antagonist of our dear President and party.

"In order not to put anybody in doubt, he referred to the former President as his mentor and father in direct contrast to the immediate past where such words were ascribed our dear President by Governor Bello," Ugwolawo said.

He also pointed out that Kogi State governor has been a stumbling block in the Federal Government's fight against the dreaded coronavirus pandemic in the country through his actions and utterances.

"All these betrayal traits didn't start today but immediately after he secured his second term in 2019. For the avoidance of doubt, we all know the unwholesome practices we carried for the governorship 'victory'.

"He took a swipe at the Federal Government's Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on the ravaging coronavirus pandemic. We all know that President Buhari and Secretary to the Government of Federation, Mr. Boss Gida Mustapha, are his targets.

"The Concerned Members of Kogi APC unequivocally dissociate ourselves from Governor Bello's delusional and treacherous presidential ambition.

"We cannot watch further and be silent in seeing our governor deriding our president and our leaders because of his delusional, unguided ambition. As it is today, Governor Bello is a huge liability to our party, APC and constituting  nuisance to the great party.

"We call on the National Caretaker Committee led by Governor Mai Mala Buni to call him to order and if he fail to change and continue treading on betrayal path, we will have no other option than to suspend him from our great partly," the group added.
