2023: I support return of power to the South —El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has urged the leadership of the All Progressives Congress to honour the ‘informal agreement’ of ensuring that power goes to the Southern region of Nigeria in 2023.

El-Rufai spoke on Monday night while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme monitored by The PUNCH.

There have been increased demands by leaders from the Southern part of the country that power be zoned to the region after the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State had recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC, saying the ruling party will protect the interest of the South-East people in the 2023 presidential election.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had also asked the APC to honour its agreement on zoning, one that the Kaduna State governor corroborated on Monday night.

El-Rufai said, “I think it is important to make this clarification. Personally, I am against zoning because I believe that no country has made progress choosing leaders based on where they come from or their ethnicity or religion. I am against and I don’t practise it. I work with people from every part of the country. I don’t care about their religion or ethnicity; I just want to get things done with the most competent persons with capacity and commitment. That’s a personal position.

“However, I believe that as a party, after eight years of President Buhari, we should honour the informal agreement of ensuring that power goes to the South, whether it is South-West or South-East, that is a different matter.

“We have agreed, we have a gentleman’s agreement that power will go to the South and I support that. In as much as I don’t think we should select leaders that way but in the present day Nigeria, that is an interim measure to pursue. But having said that, our party has not taken any decision as far as I know.”

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and former Bayelsa State governor from the South-South part of the country handed over power to incumbent President Buhari from Katsina State in 2015 after the former lost to the latter at the poll.

Boko Haram: No one knows the number of rice farmers killed

Security forces and volunteer vigilante groups in northeastern Nigeria are searching to find people still missing after dozens of civilians working in rice fields were slaughtered by armed men over the weekend

Locals say they recovered 43 bodies after Saturday’s attacks in villages near Maiduguri, the capital of the restive Borno state, which has been plagued by an armed campaign for more than 10 years.

Amid divergent figures, the United Nations late on Sunday amended an earlier statement putting the death toll at 110 people to say that “tens of civilians were ruthlessly killed and many others were wounded” in the “brutal” assault that was led by men on motorcycles

In Zabarmari village, where a funeral was held for the victims of the attack on Sunday morning, a local resident who identified himself as Umar said “no one knows the exact number of people killed”.

“We can’t account for some farmers who were there during the attack,” Umar told Al Jazeera. “We don’t know if they are still hiding inside the bush or if the attackers kidnapped them,” he said, adding that local members of government-backed vigilante groups were currently conducting search operations.

“We have buried the ones we can find and hopefully we will recover more when the vigilante men return from their search,” Umar said.

Boko haram: Zulum tables 6 recommendation for Buhari

.. Says northeast shortchanged

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum listed 6 recommendations for consideration by President Muhammadu Buhari in response to the lingering Boko Haram crisis in the northeast.

Zulum made the observation when presidential delegation led by the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmed Lawan visited him on Monday in Maiduguri.

The delegation was in Borno, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government, to commiserate and identify with the family of the victims, the Government and the people of Borno State over the incident.

6 key recommendations which if implemented will solve a decade long insurgency in Borno Zulum said, these are ;

1.Ensure immediate recruitment of Borno youth into the armed forces to supplement the military.

2.Ensure the engagement of services of  neighbours, Chad, Niger and Cameroon in clearing the remnants of the insurgents along the shores of Lake Chad.

3. Engage the services of mercineries to clear Sambisa game reserve.

4. Provide mine resistant armoured carriers and other equipment to the military and para military.

5. Support the state government in repatriation of refugees in Niger and Cameroon.

6. Increase the means of livlilhood to the people of Borno.

"After 11 years, insurgency still persist, We have made those recommendations for Mr President's kind consideration, kindly assist in ensuring that our recommendations have reached to the President." Zulum said.

Governor Zulum noted that, the north eastern governors have discovered after their meeting last week in Yola, only 45 billion naira was appropriated to the entire region in 2021 budget proposal sent to the national assembly.

"To the national assembly, Mr President North East Governors Forum held it's meeting in Adamawa last week, we have analysed the 2021 budget proposal. We have discovered that only a paltry sum of 45 billion naira allocated to the entire North East, which constituted on 0.32% of the total budget. Only 45 billion naira allocated for capital expenditure, Mr President with due respect, the correlation between peace and development need not to be overemphasized. With such a budgetry provision peace in the North East will be a nightmare." Zulum said.

The Governor added, "God has given you the position to become the Senate President you are from the North East, the Chief Whiph of the National Assembly is from Borno State, the Chairman appropriation committee is also from Borno State. We are demanding for justice fairness and equity."

"Furthermore, Mr President, the Chief Staff to the President, the status of our  roads in the entire North East region is very bad. The federal ministry of works and housing has never been fair to the people of the North East, I can remember in the last 20 years no single road is completed by the federal ministry of works and housing."

"If our major roads are rehabilitated and reconstructed, believe me sincerely the insurgency will be reduced by about 65%. This has been one of our major problem."

"Furthermore, we also noted a complete absence of budgetry provision with respect to the Mambila power project in the year 2021 budget."

"Another issue is in respect to COVID-19 stimulus, federal government budgeted the sum of over 3 trillion to tame the impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Your Excellency till this moment no MDA has contacted any of state in the North East."

"We are completely shortchanged, Your Excellency, it is disheartening to that sequel to the end SARS protest, I have observed the reaction by Nigerians including the national assembly members. people are calling for a compensation to those killed across the nation, thousands of people were killed in Borno State, and indeed in the entire North East region, nobody ever attempted to provide any compensation to anyone."

"That is the reason why, when national economic council resolved for states to constitute a judicial council i refused to do so and i will not do it. Nobody has ever said judicial commission of enquiry should be set up, either by state government or federal government to investigate the activities of Boko Haram and the excesses of the Nigerian military in the state, sabotage among others."

"This morning before you came in, i have watched in TVC that the Chief of Naval Staff is inaugurating projects to improve the welfare of the logistics command in Ogara. While we have been pleading to the Chief of Naval Staff for the last two years for them to re-establish their base in Baga, they need a very small amount, but up to now they refused to heed to our own request. With this circumstances, people should take note that peace in Borno State entails peace in the North East."

"Believe me sincerely, when Borno falls the entire country will be consumed."

Earlier, the President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmed Lawan has commiserated on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari with the government and people of Borno State on the recent attack on farmers by gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram.

The Senate President assured of the Federal Government's commitment to ending the insurgency in the northeast and Borno in particular.

He also said, the President has ordered the Nigerian Military to take the fight against insurgency to their enclaves in a sustained manner.

The delegation led by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum paid a visit to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar Garbai Elkanemi and later to Zabarmari to condole with the families of the slain farmers.

ENDSARS PROTESTS: OKOROCHA SALUTES SANWO-OLU’S LEADERSHIP, COURAGE

Ex-Imo Governor Condoles With Lagos Over Destruction

Should there be a prize for the Courageous Man of the Year, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu deserves to clinch the honour, says the lawmaker representing Imo West District in the Senate, Sen. Rochas Okorocha.

The two-term Imo State Governor said Sanwo-Olu has displayed uncommon courage in attending to emergency situations occasioned by the twin crisis of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the recent nationwide youth protests against police brutality of which Lagos was the epicentre.

Okorocha spoke when he paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos Governor at the State House, Marina on Thursday evening.

The Senator said Sanwo-Olu demonstrated unique leadership traits when he gave an audience to the EndSARS protesters and identified with their cause by marching with the youths at the risk of his safety. This, Okorocha said, stood the Governor out as a listening leader.

The lawmaker, however, condemned the violence that trailed the protests, saying the mayhem in which several public assets were destroyed had robbed the future generations of valuable inheritance.

He said: “I am here to commend the Governor for the manner he has handled the entire scenario. The courage he displayed and the proactiveness we all witnessed, even at the risk of his life during the EndSARS crisis. He came out and engaged the youths where the protests were most intense. This is a rare show of leadership. I must commend Sanwo-Olu for that.

“Despite that the violence left untold devastation in Lagos, the Governor has been toeing the path of peace. This is also commendable. The protest is a lesson for all of us; we must take the advantage of the outcome to rebuild and re-unite our country. I have no doubt that Lagos will come out of this stronger than it used to be, given Sanwo-Olu’s exemplary leadership in handling the issue.”

Okorocha cautioned against demonising the youths who led the protests, saying there was no reason to criminalise the protesters in spite the violence that trailed their demonstration. He said the protesters’ demands were in good faith and called on political leaders to embrace them as caring fathers.

Sanwo-Olu, who also suffered personal losses in the violence, said all efforts were geared towards rebuilding the State and heal the wound opened by the destruction.

The Governor said the coordinated arson drew Lagos a few steps backward, but said the State would emerge from the situation better than it was.

He reiterated that he was still in support of the agitations of the protesters and would work with them to realise their five-point demands.

Sanwo-Olu thanked the Senator for the visit, promising that Lagos would continue to be melting pot for all ethnic nationalities.

Senate passes Bill for upgrade of Kabba School of Agriculture to University status

Senate passes Bill for upgrade of Kabba School

By Taiwo Amodu - Abuja

A bill for the upgrade of Ahmadu Bello College of Agriculture, Kabba to a full-fledged specialized university passed second reading on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.

The bill sponsored by Senator representing Kogi West, Smart Adeyemi was presented for First reading, last January.

The Ahmadu Bello College of Agriculture, Kabba was first established by the Premier of the Northern Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello in 1963.

Presenting the lead debate, Senator Adeyemi said an upgrade of the school to a specialized agricultural institution would be a bold step towards not only in addressing the educational needs of the people of Kogi West Senatorial District but it will also serve as a training ground for the development of agriculturists in the country.

He said: “Agriculture with its allied sectors is unquestionably the largest livelihood provider more also in the rural areas and can contribute significantly to the GDP. Demand for the agricultural product is rising rapidly with increase in population and per capita income and growing demand from the industrial sector.

“The Ahmadu Bello College of Agriculture, Kabba when upgraded to university status will provide the holistic development of agricultural education, knowledge skills and the telescopic vision on future that will help them contribute to accelerated agricultural growth rate, enhance farmers income and generate employment in the sector.

The Institution which has been a Diploma Awarding Institution will now offer a four-year B.Sc. (Agriculture) programme. This will give the students a platform to enable the country to achieve self-sufficiency in food, reduce poverty and bring economic transformation in millions of rural families.

“One noticeable feature in the development of universities in Nigeria is the emergence of specialized universities. Most of these focus on science and technology; while only three (Makurdi, Abeokuta and Umudike) focus on agriculture hence the need to upgrade the Ahmadu Bello College of Agriculture, Kabba to a university to increase the tally to four and as a matter of fact, this will help the back to the land policy of the federal government to ensure the diversification of our national economy.

Agriculture is key and the drivers of these to me are products from the universities of Agriculture, I, therefore, advocate for the establishment of more universities of Agriculture across the country.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation further noted that the proposed University of Agriculture has no huge financial implication for the federal government as he maintained that the needed physical infrastructures are already on the ground.

“Mr President, Distinguished Colleagues, I wish to state that there is no financial implication to this Bill, all the operational structures are already in place as the University is taken over from the existing Ahmadu Bello College of Agriculture.

“I, therefore, urge you all to support this Bill to keep alive the dream of one of our country’s founding father, an exemplary and visionary leader, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, the Suduana

Tinubu greatest builders of men in Yoruba nation — Fayose

Says crisis with Makinde, Olujimi not personal

By Rotimi Ojomoyela

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as one of the greatest builders of men in Yoruba land and Nigeria at large.

Fayose said he won’t join political enemies of Tinubu to shoot him down politically, adding that people should learn how to appreciate those who had done creditably well despite political differences.

Fayose clarified that though he was not holding brief for Tinubu, who is the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, but noted that his contributions to the nation and prominence shouldn’t be undermined by anyone.

On his seeming frosty relationship with Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde and Senator representing Ekiti South, Biodun Olujimi, Fayose stated that there was no leadership tussle among the trio, saying, whatever happens, were not personal and would be resolved in the interest of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

Fayose said this in Ado Ekiti on Saturday while speaking with journalists as part of the events commemorating his 60th birthday.

Fayose, who spoke on the recent defection of the Ebonyi State Governor to the APC, said he would never jump ship like those politicians that were bereft of political ideology.

Fayose said: “I am not championing the course of Tinubu, I’m not in the position to do that, but there is no denying the fact that Tinubu is a prominent Yoruba leader, whether in APC or in PDP. There is no gainsaying that fact. Fayose is a prominent son of Yoruba nation. Governors Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Okowa, Okezie Ikpeazu, are prominent sons of southern Nigeria.

“What I am trying to say is that we can’t hide their identities and goodwill for political reasons. We can’t deny their contributions. Other leaders from the North like Ahmadu Bello Sardauna, they made different impacts, not necessarily like Awolowo. So, Tinubu has paid his dues. I have paid my dues, Okowa has paid his dues, Wike has paid his dues, we need to acknowledge them.

“The late Balarabe Musa, who was a leader of note and repute, cannot be forgotten in history. For me, Tinubu has paid his dues, I stand by that. I have not seen Tinubu after the Ekiti election by any means, we haven’t even met at a function or saw him pass.

“President Muhammadu Buhari condoled with me on the death of my sister, does it mean we are on the same page politically? No. I will not sit down in any corner to shoot down Tinubu. I am not a member of APC and I will never be. But I supported Governor Fayemi to be governor by Tinubu’s influence at a time”.

Fayose said in spite of the multifaceted crises in the PDP, that he won’t jump ship like some leaders of the party had done, saying: “if we are fighting in PDP, let us fight it inside PDP. People who have been jumping ship are armed robbers. They are being driven by greed and inordinate ambition.

“These are indications of the type of leaders we have in our country who are without ideology. They go for only what they feel would benefit them.

“Our politics is sick. Everything in Nigeria is currently sick and is a function of the leadership that we have. Governor Umahi’s joining APC after benefiting several positions in PDP was unprincipled. We do not accept the excuses given by the governor.

“I am not satisfied with some things in PDP, but, leaving the party does not equally solve the problems”.

Asiwaju Tinubu Keeps Dominating 2023 Presidency As PDP Faces Likely Implosion

By Omo-Ikirodah_

On your marks, get set, …GO, that was how we grew up when partaking in a competition. This countdown signifies the beginning of a contest.

It is a three-command start when racing: on your mark (get on your lane/spot): get set (get to starting position): then go! (MOVE AHEAD)

The great race to 2023 has already begun; as we speak all competitors have positioned themselves on their lane awaiting the final word…GO.

Tinubu this, Tinubu that, Jagaban this and Jagaban that. What is the issue with Tinubu that we no longer can’t hear a word anymore? If Tinubu is not featured in the discussion then the subject of discussion is not related to Nigerian politics.

So why always Tinubu?

Truth be told when it comes to presidential elections it is not a tea party and it requires not only the most experienced hands it also involves one with deep pockets who is widely accepted across the six Geo-political zones.

Forget all this new development of a youthful candidate for the 2023 presidency, demographics is what determines the winner, not sentiment and social media bravado. Abi, when you witnessed the just concluded United States presidential elections, was your mate featured as a contestant? (lol for those below 60)

The North is not keen about your youthful representation or too young to rule mantra for the PRESIDENCY their interest is what matters to them, abi did you see them protesting in the North during the last #EndSARS uprising that almost swallowed the Nation?

Or is the 40-year-old candidate going to be president without votes coming from Kano?

Moreover, there is a conspiracy theory that when money is thrown around for these youthful agitators they would come for each other's jugular and tear themselves apart.

Please do not twist my narrative as the new mantra of power must change hands to the youths can work for every other elective position even up to the Governorship race, but mark my words the presidency is way beyond just wishful thinking.

The youth capable of uprooting the ELDERS from Aso Rock is not yet available; if you critically look inwards we do not have the right YOUTH presently with the charisma, the charm, the money, the clout and the international backing to be president of the greatest black nation on Earth.

The word Jagaban is a traditional title meaning “Leader of warriors” and today in politics if you mention JAGABAN it depicts one with deft political manoeuvres.

This is courtesy of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu the Jagaban of Borgu.

As political pundits are busy brandishing Tinubu upadan like he is the founder and originator of the problems in Nigerian they have forgotten to take a critical look at the likely implosion of the PDP ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

Like earlier stated the Presidency is not for learners. Today the PDP has three major interests in the party or power blocs rather as the 2023 presidency draws close.

The Atiku frontiers, the Saraki warriors and the loyal armed forces with allegiance to Nyesom Wike.

The South-East, unfortunately, are still not in the picture of the whole plot and herein lies the first major problem. Already the Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi has joined the APC ahead of the 2023 presidential elections, according to Umahi he’s done with the PDP and has ported!

Umahi is preparing to carry along a large chunk of supporters along to the APC thereby depleting the PDP in the South-East.

Wike on the other hand is considered brutish and unsuitable for the top job, his recent stint with members of IPOB might be an albatross to him at a later date.

To become the President is not only about ordering traditional Rulers upadan or issuing threats at will, but it also involves having a strong CONNECT in all 36 States of the Federation. Wike is seen as an enemy of the Igbos as we speak presently.

The worse issue is that Wike might not even be considered as a Vice-Presidential candidate because of his alleged brute character, he’s considered as a FOE already if even granted the privilege.

Can Wike be vice-president and yet still be humble like GEJ was to Yar’Adua or an Osinbajo to Buhari?

Saraki on the other hand is cool and well calculated but seems to lack home support like before.

Imagine the Former Senate President since his last electoral loss has not stepped his feet in Ilorin till last weekend when he visited home to attend his late dad’s 8-year Fidau Prayer.

A serious contender for the office of the president would not neglect his people just because he failed to return to the Senate after all his family seems to be the highest political beneficiary in Kwara State thus far.

Atiku, on the other hand, looks good to carry the day in PDP but may ruffle feathers.

Suffice it to say that the PDP faces a likely implosion that may question the foundation of the party as it approaches the 2023 Presidency.

As the naysayers go about distorting the narratives around Bola Ahmed Tinubu they should also look inwards and pray that the PDP remains united and pose a strong threat to the ruling APC as the umpire finally screams the final word GO.
