Breaking: Olu of Warri Reportedly Died of Covid-19

The monarch died on Monday morning, barely a week after his fifth coronation anniversary. He was said to have met with the late Major General John Irefin, who died earlier this month from COVID-19 complications.

Though none of the palace chiefs was willing to confirm or deny it, there was palpable apprehension in the palace vicinity on Monday while some people were also in a sombre mood.

A source confirmed the news to SaharaReporters, saying the monarch died on Monday morning from the coronavirus. Another source said many palace workers besieged the adjoining shops selling strong alcoholic drinks to buy from them as they believed it would cure them of COVID-19 should they have contracted it from the monarch.

“Olu of Warri is dead but the palace chiefs are trying to keep the information hidden from the public till they are sure the time is right,” the source added.

The late monarch, who was born on March 19, 1955, ascended the throne on December 12, 2015.

Kankara Abduction: Tinubu says Buhari has been vindicated.

All Progressives Congress National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari over his prompt intervention in rescuing the over 300 kidnapped students of Kankara Government Science Secondary School in Katsina State.

He also commended Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari and the armed forces for working tirelessly to secure the release of the schoolboys.

Asiwaju Tinubu said the quick release of the schoolboys from their abductors had vindicated the president in his untiring efforts to rid the country of insecurity and see the back of bandits and insurgents in the land.

In a press statement released at the weekend by his Media Office in Lagos, the former governor of Lagos State said:

“The initial abduction of the over 300 Kankara schoolboys from their dormitory in broad daylight was unsettling and raises serious concern.

However, their prompt rescue from their abductors is heart-warming

Bola Tinubu: Making good his political ambition, DONS EZE

Quite recently, former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT), the Jagaban of Lagos, is becoming increasingly visible, hitting the roads, visiting some dignatories and making some critical statements.

This is being interpreted in many quarters as a subtle campaign by the APC national leader to make good his desire to become the President of Nigeria, come 2023.

Bola Tinubu had of late assembled a crack team of professional politicians that comprised of former Senators, former members of the House of Representatives, serving and former political office holders from different states across the South West zone, who have been accompanying him on different visits to some parts of the country.

Under the aegis of South West Agenda 2023 (SWAGA ‘23), a group of rainbow coalition of like-minded politicians led by former Works Minister and former Senate spokesperson, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the team had already visited the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aji Ogungunniso I, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, to seek their royal blessings for the actualization of Tinubu's political dream.

Other prominent Yoruba leaders on the team were Senator Adesoji Akanbi; Bosun Oladele, a former member of House of Representatives; Jide, son of a former Governor of Lagos State, Kayode Jakande; Kafilat Ogbara, Commissioner for State Audit Service Commission in Lagos State; former federal lawmakers such as Oyetunji Ojo, Rotimi Makinde, Toba Oke, Gboyega Okegbemi as well as the immediate past Secretary to Ondo State Government, Ifedayo Abegunde.

From the South West, Bola Tinubu and his team proceeded up north, to Maiduguri, Borno State, in what the APC leader claimed was "condolence visit on the Government and people of Borno State" on the recent killing of farmers by Boko Haram at Zabarmari rice field.

But rather than dwell on what he claimed was the purpose of his visit, Bola Tinubu dropped a bombshell: ordered that "all divisive forces" within the APC must be weeded out. “Any remaining rats and cockroaches should be sprayed out of the party,” Tinubu ordered.

Tinubu who said that he was not in Borno State on politics, maintained that the APC must live up to its symbol, the broom which, he said, "signifies the importance of unity and work to take out any form of disunity", explaining that the covenant of APC with the Nigerian people was to work together in unity to bring about development and progress.

While insisting that there was unity in APC, Tinubu further held that anything that would work contrary to the progress of the party and Nigeria should be weeded out.

Having visited Borno State on "condolence visit", Bola Tinubu, may have by now been on his way to Katsina State on "sympathy visit" for the hundreds of students that were abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, by the same Boko Haram insurgents, even though our President who is from Katsina State and currently holidaying there, and who took time to visit his cows, did not see any need going to visit the agonizing parents the abducted students.

With the air of 2023 around the corner and blowing incessantly, there is no doubt that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going to be much more visible in the months ahead, while he and the people of South West zone who believe that they have been ordained to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023, may be impressing upon us to toe their political direction.

For us, we see SWAGA '23 (South West Agenda 2023), as not only aimed at drumming support for Tinubu's 2023 Presidential ambition, but also at ensuring that other geopolitical zones are intimidated out from contesting the Presidency in 2023, particularly under the APC.

Already, some South West political bigwigs in APC, like Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had told us that during the formation of APC, that there was "a deal", call it gentleman's agreement they signed, that after Buhari would have completed his tenure, it would be the turn of the South West to take over from

Hindrances to APC’s promises should be weeded out – Tinubu

The National Leader of All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Monday asked that divisive forces within the party should be weeded out.

Tinubu, who led some party men to Maiduguri to pay condolence on the government and people of Borno State on the killing of rice farmers by Boko Haram at Zabarmari, said, “Any remaining rats and cockroaches should be sprayed out of the party.”

The party leader, who said he was not in Borno on politics, insisted that the party must live to its symbol, the broom, which signified the importance of unity and work to take out any form of disunity.

Tinubu, who emerged from about an hour closed-door meeting with the governor, said the covenant of the APC with the Nigerian people was to work together in unity to bring about development and progress.

Tinubu insisted that there was unity in the party, noting that anything that would however work contrary to the progress of the party and Nigeria should be weeded out.

Boko Haram: Tinubu visits Zulum, wants military to change strategy

... Says Zulum combines talent and character

The national leader of APC and former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in Maiduguri on Monday, with call on the Nigerian military to change their strategy.

“We have been on this (boko haram) for sometime, We have seen the reaction of the federal government, we have seen the reaction of the armed forces, this is no longer a conventional warfare, this is more tactical, more reason, more crude. In such situation what we do is to replan our strategy. We have seen the Governor’s life has been attacked more than one occasion in effort to eliminate him but Allah is mighty, he has protected and will continue to protect you”Tinubu said.

Tinubu, who was on sympathy visit to the Governor over the killing of farmers by Boko Haram insurgents, added that under insurgency governance would hardly excel.

"You can't concentrate, become innovative and excel if you have to make educational development in fear. We saw people who have endured so much agony, denial, brutality decided to run to their farms to develop means of livelihood not only for themselves but for all of us, at the end they were slaughtered. That's not religion, it is not in our religion (Islam), it is not in Christianity either, it is an act of wickedness. I want His Excellency and members of the state executive to see this visit not as a condolence only, not a sympathy only, but as a solidarity and commitment that we must defeat all evil doers” Tinubu also said.

... Zulum combines talent and character

The APC leader commended Governor Zulum’s commitment to the security of the lives of the citizens.

“Professor Zulum... is a man of courage, brilliance, talented plus great character. Is a different thing for one to be talented, and another to have character. Zulum is a man who is talented combined with great character and courageously take the responsibility of governance without looking back. Confront evil, most unfortunate aspects of it is the fact that this is our country. I respect the Governor, he has so much courage and strong determination, he has been consistent, his voice is loud, he is the man, he is peace, stability and safety of lives and properties of not only people of Borno but the entire country."

The APC leader advised that to deny evil doers from recruitment of vulnerable youth, government must come up with social protection measures that will take them off the streets.

"We have to remove these unemployed youth from the streets, from been available for evil doers for recruitment.  Dont tell me they are illiterates, anybody that can operate Keke Napep and do little repairs, anybody that can hold guns, dismantle guns and service it is no more an illiterate”.

Governor Zulum, in his response, appreciated what he indicated was to him, a special visit by the national leader of the APC.

Zulum reiterated the commitment of his administration to doing whatever it can, towards protecting the lives and property of Borno people.

STOP UNNECESSARY & WICKED INSINUATIONS ON THE DEMISE OF LATE MAJ GEN JO IREFIN, NIGERIA ARMY REACTS

1. The sudden death of Maj General JO Irefin is no doubt a great loss to the Nigerian Army (NA), his family and the country at large. In view of the fake news, unnecessary and wicked insinuations that started emanating from unknown group or individuals, the NA wishes to inform members of the public the sequence of events that led to the death of the late senior officer.

2. Recall that the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2020, started on 7 December 2020 following the virtual declaration by President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for its commencement. The participants who were mostly Principal Staff Officers, General Officers Commanding (GOCs), Corps Commanders, Commandants of NA schools, Directors and other invited dignitaries assembled in Giri venue of the first phase of the conference during which Mr President virtually commissioned the NA Cyber Warfare Command Headquarters among other vital projects.

3. Among the attendees was Maj Gen JO Irefin the erstwhile GOC 6 Division NA. While at Giri, the General started complaining of discomfort. Despite the discomfort, he was at phase 2 in life camp for the commissioning of Housing Scheme for families of officers and soldiers killed in action from where he left the venue for his accommodation. He was later taken to Defence Medical Centre same day at about 2125 hours  having complained of fever, headache and mild cough. Medical history revealed that he was treated for malaria with parenteral artemether a week ago at 6 Division Medical Services and Hospital Port Harcourt where he was the GOC. He had fever but oxygen saturation was normal at 99%. Other vital signs were essentially stable on presentation. A working diagnosis of drug resistant malaria to rule out lobar pneumonia and COVID 19 infection was made. He was also placed on cefriaxone and COVID 19 test was requested.

December 12 local government Council election in Kogi state Shambolic and Fraudulent-Teejay Yusuf

The December 12 local government Council election in Kogi state will forever stand out as the most fraudulent and shambolic election ever held anywhere in Nigeria since the beginning of the current democratic dispensation, a member of the House of Representatives,  Honourable Teejay Yusuf has said.

According to Honourable Yusuf who represents Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu federal constituency,  the state government conducted the purported election with wanton disregard for the basic principles of transparency that govern elections in a democracy.

In a statement, he recalled that long before the council polls, many citizens in the state had expressed anxieties about the capacity of the state's electoral authorities to conduct credible elections.

“Recent patterns of barefaced manipulations in the conduct of local council elections have aroused much concern; nowhere is such concern as grave as what unfolded in zkogo state.

“on December 12, 2020 when the Kogo state local government election was scheduled to hold, many citizens inmost council wards waited all day without seeing either election materials or election officials.

“Curiously, purported results reflecting random allocation of votes made to favour chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the ruling APC later started flying around as the state electoral authorities' pureported results!

“If anything happened at all across the state on that day, it was a barefaced robbery of Kogi citizens’’ votes but I urge all our teeming supporters not to lose heart because we shall soon have genuine chance to vote out APC and their shenanigans entirely", he said.

TRIBUTE TO GEN. IREFIN: A GOLDEN HEART STOPPED BEATING.

Micheal Obanewo

It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that I write this tribute to late MAJOR GENERAL OLUBUNMI IREFIN (GOC Portharcourt Devision). You were an uncle, a brother, a father and a friend to all in a million; humble, kind, loving, caring and good at heart and soul.!!!

Today we will mourn you in our own way as we pay tribute to you. It is indeed a sad day in our land.

We still wake up every morning hoping that it is a dream, and it hurts knowing you are gone forever because we were together this time two weeks ago for your mother's burial ceremony.

You were always around us. The people's General... Your sudden death came as a rude shock. We did not expect it and wish we had more time to continue to appreciate you.

You touched so many lives by your selfless and countless acts of kindness, always giving and never expecting any favours in return.

Your love for us is one that is only comparable to that of a mother, this is so because it’s indescribable.

Little did I know when I wrote last Sunday on: "WHAT WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED FOR". Thank God for the good testimonies shared by everyone about you.

You have left a void in the family that will never be filled.

Words cannot describe this difficult moment, but if this is the last time I get to say goodbye then, I know I will do so with the knowledge that I consider myself blessed to have met and discussed with you.

While we mourn today, we also take comfort in the fact that your mission on earth has been fulfilled. We thank the Lord for your life and bid you farewell until we meet again.

God in His infinite wisdom knows best. May our Lord comfort and sustain your family, your wife and children now and always. May God Almighty keep you safe resting in perfect peace, Amen.

Declare a state of emergency in states bedevilled by banditry and terrorism-Atiku Abubakar

Time For Better Strategies To Secure Nigeria.

The abduction of a large number of students at the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara in Katsina State, is a very unwelcome escalation of the spate of insecurity in the nation, one which I condemn in the strongest possible terms.

I sympathise with the parents of the abducted children and the government and people of Katsina, my adopted home state and home of my late benefactor, Tafida Shehu Musa Yar’adua. I pray for their safe return.

While I urge our nation’s law enforcement agencies to immediately swing to action and rescue the missing students, I am nevertheless conscious of the fact that we cannot continue to be reactionary in our response to the growing insecurity in Nigeria. Something has to give.

I therefore call on the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency in states bedevilled by banditry and terrorism, for an offensive and decisive war on terror and insecurity.

For the avoidance of doubt, the emergency I call for should follow the steps prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and case law, by leaving all democratically elected state and local government structures intact.

The rationale is quite simple: We cannot win the war on terror by continuing with the same strategies we have deployed over the last five years. That they have not worked is very glaring, with the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara incidence being the latest in a long line of proofs.

If we must get better results, we must implement better strategies. Strategies that may have to include the temporary stoppage of the boarding school system in all the affected states, in favour of a day students approach, until the situation is brought under control.

Strategies that must include 24 hours armed military guard for each school in the affected states.

No sacrifice is too great to make to return law and order to the affected communities, and that must be the singular focus of the Federal Government until this menace is eradicated.

Armed Bandits invade government school in Katsina, kidnapped hundreds of students.

Armed Bandits on Friday attacked a boys boarding school in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina state, killing a security guard, and kidnapping large number of students. Residents said.

The Bandits stormed Government Science Secondary School Kankara (GSSS) located in Kankara town, shot a security gateman and abducted an undisclosed number of students.

Multiple sources revealed to Katsina Post that the bandits at their large number on motorbikes stormed the school at 10:45 pm Friday night with heavy arms while shooting sporadically for over an hour.

This happen in the wake of President Buhari's private visit to Katsina State few days ago.

Aiyetoro Community Protest, cast doubt over actual cause of Gen. Irefin's death

AYETORO GBEDE DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION/ AYETORO- GBEDE TRADITIONAL COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE ON THE DEATH OF GENERAL OLUBUNMI IREFIN.

On behalf of Olu of Ayetoro Gbede, Oba D.S Ehindero,  Ayetoro Development Association and Ayetoro Gbede Traditional Council wishes to express their deep sorrow over the sudden death of General Olubunmi Irefin which occurred on the 10th December, 2020.

According to Shakespeare, " Death, is a necessary end, will come when it will come ". The sequence of events before the death of General Irefin and the main cause of his sudden death as propounded by the military authority, which they claimed is Covid-19 made the highest decision organs of Ayetoro Gbede community namely, Ayetoro Gbede Traditional  Council and Ayetoro Gbede Development Association  to interrogate the main cause of his death as propounded by the military authority.

We should not forget that General Olubunmi Irefin was in Ayetoro Gbede two weeks ago for the burial ceremony of his late mother. During the brief period of his stay at home, he was full of life, and, observers of the general will agree that  every movement of his, was with military precision. Suddenly, a signal came to him from Abuja to attend Chief of Army Staff Conference which started last Monday (7th December, 2020). We did not hear of his sickness until the sad news came to us yesterday, 10th December, 2020 that the General died of Covid -19; and the sudden rush for his burial tomorrow 12th December, 2020.

The mouth piece of Ayetoro Gbede community namely, Ayetoro Gbede Traditional Council and Ayetoro Gbede Development Association were not happy with the military establishment over the reason it claimed was responsible for the death if General Olubunmi Irefin for the following reasons:

1. If the incubation period of Covid-19 is 2 weeks after which the victim will start to show symptoms like high fever, severe  headache etc, is that the case for late General Olubunmi Irefin?

2.  Even if the symptoms  mentioned above manifest in the General, does it also kills it victim instantly?

3. At advance age of 80 years, the former Chief of Staff to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, late Abba Kyari, battled Covid -19 for weeks before he died, common logic should tell us that General Irefin at younger age, even if it is true that he contacted Covid -19 should be able to battle it for longer period of time.

4. Except there is Covid -20 which we doubt, Covid -19 does not kill it victims for 3 days.

5. Why the sudden haste in the burial of the General by the military authority?

Not until convincing answers are provided by the military authority for the above questions, Ayetoro Gbede community will not be happy with the military establishment over the reason they claimed was responsible for the death of our son, General Olu Irefin.

AMINU A.A wrote for AGDA/ Ayetoro Gbede Traditional Council.

Meanwhile the AYETORO-GBEDE STUDENT UNION YESTERDAY MOURNED,PROTESTED AND CALLED FOR THOROUGH INVESTIGATION INTO MAJOR GENERAL IREFIN'S DEATH

In a statement by the union President, Comr Olowosagba Ayodele , he said: “This loss is irreparable and the grief unbearable.

The report from the Nigerian Army Force  leaves us with no doubt in our position. How on earth will a major General who is attending Chief of staffs conference die of Covid-19 without showing any symptoms even before he left for abuja from port Harcourt.

We have records of many gallant and dedicated Yoruba officers who met their untimely death in such clumsy circumstances. Their deaths were shrouded in controversies such as this.

Air Commodore Shittu Alao  was said to have had a plane crash until the Autopsy carried out by the young Doctor Adetokunbo Ademola revealed that he had gunshots in his body, the young Doctor was also assassinated almost immediately.

We recall that the late captain  Ayo toba was  also said to be ambushed by Boko harams.

And the son of a legal luminary, Chief Olu Onogoruwa was murdered within his father estate,  Onogoruwa never survived the trauma as it led to his untimely death.

A fresh memory is Another case that has prompted us to have a critical look at General irefin case, is the arranged accident of another Illustrious Okun daughter  in person of Late Tolulope Arotile, who was said to be killed from injuries sustained when a reverse car of her long time friend mistakenly hit her at the air force base. Is this not too cheap for our sensibility?

At the moment over (400) Yoruba senior and junior military officers have been murdered by the evil conspirators in the military and government of Nigeria

We are not satisfied with the explanation given for the cause of GOC Olubunmi Irefin's death, we need a thorough investigation

It was after this that the Senate resolved to let the Congress decide on whose faction would be upheld.

For the first time Since the dissolution of the 12th Senate, the gavel and the maze which are the symbol of authority of the Congress was seen at the Congress.

Comrade Nayo Jude drew the attention of Congressmen to a matter of urgency when he moved a motion as for the Congress to affirm and recognize the authenticity of Comrade Seun Bello as National President since it was the same election/convention that brought him in also brought in the sitting Senate president. The motion was seconded by Comr Adebowale Adeniyi, the National vice President.

The Senate President in response to the demands of the Congressmen proceeded to a voting of "I's and Nays". The voting process returned Seun Bello unopposed. The Senate President declared Seun Bello as the Authentic and only Recognized NAOS President, declaring any other Factional Executives as impersonators and threats to the Unity and Progress of the association.

The Senate President, Sen. Kayode Opeyemi Julius after then call on Comr Seun Bello to give account of stewardship of his administration.

In the Speech of the National President, Comrade Seun Bello, he itemized Projects that the Current Executives has executed right from the inception of the administration. Stressing the fact that he never recieved a dime as subvension from the Kogi State government. He thanked all local district Presidents for maintaining a decent relationship with him during the cause of his administrative struggle. He also appreciated the 15th Senate for playing an unbiased role in the discharge of their legislative duties.

The Congressmen thereby declared Comr. Bolaji Ehinmoro as an Impersonator, and advised every member of the public not to deal with him on issues that concern NAOS as any of such dealings would be termed illegal.

The Chief whip of the 15th Senate Arm, Dist. Sen. Kinrin-ola Anjola Emmanuel implored the Senate arm to seek for a means by which all NAOS properties in the possession of Comrade Bolaji Ehinmoro will be restored back from the Factional President and handed over to the National President as Recognized By the Senate Arm and the Unity Congress.

He also said all bank accounts operated in the name of the association other than the ones operated by the Executive board led by Comrade Seun Bello be deactivated and further transactions in the name of the association to this accounts be termed as fraudulent. Reason National Assembly has no power to compel President Buhari to appear before them.

The AGF, Malami SAN, is correct in his view that

This is based on Section 67 (1) of the 1999 Constitution which gives the president a discretion whether to attend the National Assembly or not.

Section 67(1) states thus:

"The President MAY attend any joint meeting of the National Assembly or any meeting of either House of the National Assembly, either to deliver an address on national affairs, including fiscal measures, or to make such statement on the policy of government as he considers to be of national importance."

The operative word in this provision is MAY. The word may in law conveys discretion; unlike the word SHALL which conveys a mandatory or compulsory meaning.

This discretion is consistent with the presidential system of government.

Furthermore, resolutions of the National Assembly do not have binding force. National Assembly can only exercise compulsive powers through lawmaking as provided for in Section 58 and 59 of the Constitution. The National Assembly cannot issue warrant for the President's arrest.

Section 308 (1) (b) of the Constitution gives the president, vice president, governors and their deputies immunity from arrest and imprisonment.

However, under Section 67 (2) of the Constitution, the National Assembly can compel a Minister's attendance.

It states thus: "A Minister of the Government of the Federation shall attend either House of the National Assembly if invited to explain to the House the conduct of his Ministry and in particular when the affairs of that Ministry are under discussion." The word used is SHALL.

Notwithstanding the above, the National Assembly can invoke its powers under Section 143 of the Constitution by impeaching President Buhari for gross misconduct for failing terribly in the paramount duty of the government; which is provision of security to the people of Nigeria.

Rather than grandstand over Buhari's disregard for their resolution, the National Assembly should save the Nigerian people from the disaster that the Buhari regime has become by impeaching Buhari. The current National Assembly has been an accomplice in Buhari's gross failings.

They should now realize that no serious minded person will regard them so long as they continue to defend, justify and support the lawlessness, failures and impunity of the Buhari regime. They should remove Buhari if they are serious about their role.

The time to act is now.

Reps Suspends Buhari’s Scheduled Appearance

The House of Representatives on Wednesday suspended its earlier plan for a briefing by President Muhammadu Buhari, after it became clear the president would no longer honour the House’s invitation.

At plenary Wednesday, the House failed to mention an item on its order paper to admit Mr Buhari into the House chamber.

It was the clearest evidence Mr Buhari, who was billed to explain the terrible security situation in the country to lawmakers, had cancelled the plan, confirming a PREMIUM TIMES exclusive he would back off.

All Progressives Congress (APC) governors had urged Mr Buhari to shelve his scheduled appearance.

At a Tuesday night meeting between the governors and the party’s caucus in the National Assembly, those in attendance argued for hours on reasons for and against the appearance of the president before the house.

PREMIUM TIMES was briefed on the deliberations at the meeting by multiple sources present.

The governors were said to be concerned because their state houses of assembly may want to take the opportunity to “harass” the governors by seeking frequent appearances.

On Wednesday, the speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who presided over the plenary deliberately skipped the item.

It was tittled “That the House, pursuant to Order 19, Rule 8 (1) and (2) of the Standing Orders, do admit into the Chamber, the Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Service Chiefs and other dignitaries for the purpose of receiving an Address by the President and Commander–In –Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the Security situation in the country”.

EXCLUSIVE: Insecurity: APC governors prevail on Buhari not to appear before National Assembly

Garba Shehu had confirmed on Tuesday that Mr Buhari would honour the invitation by the House of Representatives.

The planned address of a joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday over the worsening security situation in Nigeria now appears uncertain.

This situation followed the antics of the governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the party’s National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, who moved the motion for the cancellation of the President’s planned address, reportedly cited a possibility of unnecessary immitations of such invitation by state assemblies nationwide. He was quickly supported by Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi and other colleagues.

Assembly’s invitation

On December 1, after a riotous debate on the floor of the House of Representatives, members unanimously endorsed a motion of urgent national importance by a representative, Satomi Ahmed.

The motion had sought the appearance of the President over the recent killings of farmers in Borno State.

The attack by Boko Haram on November 28, on mostly rice farmers in Zabarmari, a community in Jere Local Government Area, saw at least 43 farmers killed. More than a dozen are still said to be missing till date.

The incident immediately sparked local and international outrage, with many Nigerians calling for the resignation of service chiefs and even the president himself.

The development has also been cited as one of the reasons for the renewed protests by young Nigerians across some states, who are demanding the resignation of President Buhari.

But in its response, the upper chamber of the National Assembly simply called for the removal of the service chiefs. It was the third time such demand was made by the red chamber.

President Buhari also condemned the attack and sent a federal government delegation to Borno to condole the state government.

President agreed to address assembly

Meanwhile, less than a week after the summon was made, Mr Buhari agreed to address the joint session of the two chambers on the issue of Boko-Haram and the general insecurity across the country.

PREMIUM TIMES on Monday reported the confirmation by the Presidency that the session had been set for Thursday.

The Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, had earlier told journalists that the president had agreed to appear before the House, saying the date would soon be made known to Nigerians.

“We have agreed on a date and he will meet with the House to address the situation. We have fixed a date but we will communicate with you,” he said.

When contacted, a spokesman to Mr Buhari, Garba Shehu, said, “The President will address a joint session of the parliament.”

How APC governors halted plan

Ahead of the APC NEC meeting, the governors of the ruling party had earlier held a meeting on Monday evening to debate the agenda of the NEC meeting.

At the meeting, PREMIUM TIMES learnt the governors resolved to advise Mr Buhari against appearing before the National Assembly over the security situation in the country.

Their argument, this newspaper learnt, was that such appearance by the president might create a precedence that state assemblies could capitalise on to frequently

They also reportedly resolved to pursue the agenda by moving a motion for its suspension during the NEC meeting.

True to their plan, the Ondo State Governor, Mr. Akeredolu, moved the motion and was supported by other governors in attendance.

The NEC subsequently endorsed the decision and mandated the governors to engage the assembly members from their states for proper briefing and interaction.

APC governors set to meet National Assembly members

Indications have now emerged that the governors have scheduled a meeting with National Assembly members. It is, however, not yet clear what the composition of the meeting would be.

It is unclear if members of opposition parties at the National Assembly would be invited and what would be their position on the sudden change in plan.

Efforts to reach Yekini Nabena, the national deputy spokesperson of the APC, to comment for this report was unsuccessful as he neither picked his call nor responded to a short message sent to him.

It was the same outcome when Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu was contacted. He also didn’t pick his call and was yet to respond to our reporter’s message as of the time of filing this report.
