Obangogo Hill Station: An Amazing Adventure this Christmas

The people of Okunland are set to go on another round of adventure this Christmas with the exploration of the touristic potentials in Obangogo hill station on the 27th December, 2016.

Obangogo located in Kabba, Kogi State the middle belt region of Nigeria, shares boundaries with Taraba State on the East; Plateau State on the North and Edo State on the West; and Anambra, Enugu, Cross River States on the South. The entire landmass presents hills of various shades and touristic appeals.

Obangogo Hill station is situated in Egunbe community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. It is located just 5 kilometers off Okene – Kabba Express Way by the permanent site of College of Education (Technical), Gbeleko.

Going down memory lane, Egunbe community was very powerful in Oweland those days because they were the first people to settle outside the present location of Kabba town.

The community came to existence as a result of the activities of the Nupe warriors who invaded the entire Okunland. The hill became a place of abode for as many people that sought refuge there. As at the time, the land of Egunbe was very fertile for the people’s farming activities, members of the community so engage in the farming even beyond the hills station to the other side which is Ogidi, another community in Ijumu Local Government.

So, the history of Kabba would not be complete without the mention of the experiences in Obangogo hill station. The hill was the saving grace when the Nupes wanted to take the entire people captives, even Ogidi a neighboring community were not spared as they too sought refuge there.

The historic facts on the hill include the story of Elegha, the Ako kereje, kereje, the coffin that turned to stone, there is a portion of the rock that is as good as a talking drums. There is a spring of water that never dries the year round. It served as the main source of water for the people then. There is also the mystical lake called ‘ako’. There are five of them and they never run dry despite its stagnation.
There are also three big rocks called the Oke Metas which symbolises the three major kings(Ololus) in Kabba.
All roads lead to Kabba as more Okun people both home and in diaspora are all willing to have an amazing experience from this adventure.

Teen female bombers kill 30 in Adamawa market

It was a Black Friday for residents of Madagali town in Adamawa State yesterday as two suicide bombers, said to be teen female students, attacked Madagali Market in Madagali Local Council, leaving about 30 people dead.
The Army Public Relations Officer in charge of 28 Task For Battalion in Mubi, Major Badare Akintoye, who confirmed the incident, said that 30 people were killed and 57 others seriously injured in the attacks.
He said the two attacks occurred around noon when buying and selling was going on in the market.
“The attack in Madagali was carried out by two female school children. They detonated two bombs at the same time, killing 30 people. They also died.
“Based on the report before me from our men working on ground, 30 were killed and 57 people were also injured during the attack and security agents have taken over the area to avoid enemies coming in to cause another attack,” he stated.
An eyewitness, John Musa, said that two suspected female suicide bombers detonated the bombs that exploded at the grains and second-hand clothes sections of the market yesterday at noon, killing dozens of people.
Chairman of Madagali Local Council, Yusuf Muhammad, who also confirmed the attacks, called on the federal government to deploy soldiers to the surrounding areas where he said Boko Haram insurgents set up camps.
He described the attacks as a setback to the relative peace being enjoyed by residents, who have resumed normal commercial and social activities following successful military operations that dislodged the insurgents from the area.
Madagali
While condemning the latest bomb blast, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has proposed intelligence surge to avert such horrendous attacks and greater vigilance on the part of citizens, especially in the liberated communities.
In a statement issued on his behalf by his media office, the former Vice President expressed his deepest grief and regret over such heartless disregard for human life by terrorists, noting that indiscriminate mass murderers should not be allowed to defeat humanity and impose their reign of terror on the people.
According to the former Vice President, the Boko Haram terrorists still pose a real threat, adding that the country must redouble its efforts and unite against them.
He urges greater vigilance on the part of citizens and increased intelligence, as the military ramps up its operations against Boko Haram insurgents.
He said he was highly embarrassed that these terrorists are hiding behind religious ideology to commit atrocities against innocent people, despite the fact that Islam, and indeed any other religion prohibits the murder of innocent people.
The Turakin Adamawa regrets that the Boko Haram bandits have virtually crippled Northern economy and disrupted its social life.
He calls on the Federal Government to redouble its efforts, even as he proposes an intelligence surge in the war against terrorism, adding that the militants have contempt for peace and therefore, should be fiercely confronted. He also calls for greater vigilance among members of the civil population in order to identify and frustrate suicide bombers in their tracks.
The former Vice President condoles the families of the victims and survivors of the blast as well as the Adamawa State Government.
The APC chieftain urges that no efforts should be spared towards providing medical treatment for the scores of injured.
“To the people of Madagali in my home state of Adamawa, affected by the bomb blast today (Friday), we are praying for you.
“Our people will not be bowed by terrorists. We must keep up our vigilance and increase intelligence even in liberated communities,” the statement read.

We’re relentless in making recession temporary experience – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Federal Government was making relentless efforts to make the hardship caused by economic recession in the country temporary.
The president, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of the National University Commission (NUC), Prof. Adamu Rasheed, said this at the 42nd convocation ceremony of Obafemi Awolowo University, yesterday.
According to him, government had put necessary measures in place but that it also needed the cooperation of Nigerians.
He said, “There is no gainsaying that we live in challenging times. Nigeria is not exempted from the political, security and economic upheavals going on worldwide.
“We have been making good progress, particularly on security issues, and we are relentless in our efforts to ensure that this economic recession is a very temporary experience in our national life. I am firmly convinced that with the measures being put in place and the cooperation of all Nigerians, it will soon be a thing of the past.
“This administration is committed to ensuring that as a nation, we are self-sufficient in food and thereof no longer dependent on food importation by 2019. Foreign exchange saved in the process will be channeled into reviving our industries, enhancing the hydrology and ecology of the Lake Chad Basin, improving our power generation and distribution infrastructure and completing all the abandoned rural electrification projects nationwide, among other things.”
He expressed concern at the growing rate of unemployment in the country, advising youths to develop entrepreneurial skills.
He said, “In September 2016, our unemployment rate reached a high value of 17.9 per cent as compared to 9.9 per cent the previous year.
I intend to remind you that although this administration is doing its best to provide jobs for the teeming population of Nigerian youths, our efforts still need to be complemented by the private sector. We have been bringing on board several entrepreneurship initiatives that create an enabling environment for job creators not only to thrive, but also excel.
“Promotion of local products, encouragement of export markets, tapping of indigenous raw materials, etc., are some of the avenues for this to operate. As fresh graduates with multitude of invigorating ideas, you are encouraged to forward your proposals under the appropriate parastatals and agencies.”
He explained that government had directed the National Universities Commission to chart a new course for curriculum development and review in the Nigerian University System.
He said, “This administration is concerned with the quality of university education in Nigeria. Government believed that the quality of universities is influenced by a number of factors within the output, process and output domains.
“The reality is that every facet of the university be it academic or non-academic, contributes to its quality. It is expected that universities will embark on strategic capacity building to bring academics up-to-date with the new trends in their respective subject areas in order to achieve the desired impact.”
The president urged management of federal institutions to be accountable, saying, “Visitations to universities are statutory requirements for accountability of the institutions to government and citizenry. Visitation to federally owned universities is due and government has appropriately constituted panels to embark on the exercise.
“The details of the exercise, which will commence in the New Year (2017), will be released in due course.
Staff, students, parents and relevant stakeholders are enjoined to seize the opportunity that will be provided by the exercise to submit memoranda for the success of the visitation.”
The Chancellor of OAU, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, challenged members and staff of public universities to ensure adequate utilisation of resources made available by the government.
Abubakar, who doubles as Etsu Nupe, urged stakeholders in public universities to embrace dialogue instead of industrial action.
He said, “We are all experiencing the challenges of a very complicated world. As public universities, we have to depend on government for necessary resources required to run the universities. The prevailing economic conditions have unfortunately constrained the government’s capacity to avail these resources required to run universities.
“Indeed, this situation is unlikely to change in the near future. I appeal to staff to exercise more patience, embrace dialogue and negotiations instead of resorting to industrial action.”
The acting Vice-Chancellor of the OAU, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, advised the graduating students to make a difference in Nigeria by engaging in positive history-making achievements.
He said, “Let me remind you that the nation is facing challenges that require an intellectual response, involving the application of righteousness and cutting-edge research and service to tackle public challenges. You are agents of change, and today, as you get empowered and commissioned to make a difference in different sectors of the nation in particular, and the world at large, you must carry along your integrity and honour.
“My charge to you therefore is to explore novel strategies in applying what you have learnt in the lecture theatres, studios, and laboratories in order to provide solution to these growing challenges of our time.”
Meanwhile, no fewer than 66 students graduated with first class at the 42nd convocation ceremony, which started on Wednesday; 15 students graduating with distinction from the faculty of pharmacy.
The university also produced 1,305 students with Second Class Upper; 2,127 Second Class Lower; 606 Third Class; and 50 students had Pass.
For the unclassified degrees, 65 students graduated with credit; and 412 with pass. The summary of the statistics of the graduands presented by the acting Vice-Chancellor of the OAU, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, shows that a total of 6,827 students successfully graduated; while 4,646 students were conferred with first degree; 518 Postgraduate Diplomas; 1,663 got Postgraduate Degrees.

I did not order APC supporters to kill in Rivers – Oyegun

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, yesterday refuted a report by a national daily credited to him as calling for fire-for-fire ahead of today’s re-run federal and state legislative elections in Rivers State.
Odigie-Oyegun, in a statement by his Chief of Staff, Edwin Ikhinmwin, said the comments credited to him were twisted to suit some obvious private interest, noting that he was always a man of peace.
According to Ikhinmwin: “The APC National Chairman has consistently advocated for peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible elections and will not be part of any plan that will lead to loss of innocent lives.
“The comment by the national chairman at Thursday’s mega rally was clear. The APC is on a rescue mission in Rivers State to save the people from the blood-thirsty and oppressive regime in the state. He called on APC supporters to protect their votes.
“He expressed the determination of the federal government to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible re-run election on Saturday (today) through the massive deployment of security, so that voters do not stay away out of fear.
“The media and general public are advised to disregard the fabricated statements, which are false, ill-motivated, mischievous and irresponsible.

Supreme Court orders High Court to retry Dahiru’s case against Tambuwal

The Supreme Court Friday declined to remove Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal from office.
Instead, the apex court ruled that a case filed by Senator Umaru Dahiru challenging the nomination of Tambuwal as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the April 2015 governorship election be retried at the Federal High Court.
Dahiru contested for the governorship election in the December 2014 primaries of the APC, but lost to Tambuwal, who eventually went on to win the gubernatorial poll conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in April 2015 and was subsequently sworn-in as Governor on May 29 of the same year.
Friday’s ruling followed an earlier judgement given by the Supreme Court in June this year which dismissed application by the Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and it’s governorship candidate, Senator Abdallah Wali, to be joined as parties to Dahiru’s suit.
In a judgement written by Hon Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammed JSC and read by Hon Justice CC Nweze JSC, the court held that rather than consider the case as mere academic exercise, the High Court should retry the case on its merit.
Counsel to Tambuwal, Paul M. Kassim Esq, who led six other lawyers, said the defence are are satisfied with the ruling and will get set for trial at the Federal High Court.
“Our position remains unchanged, that our client was validly nominated by the APC and was duly elected Governor by the good people of Sokoto State,” he told reporters after the judgement.
In the June ruling by now retired Justice Sulaiman Galadima JSC, the Supreme Court held that PDP and Wali lacked the locus standi to apply to be joined in the suit, describing the two as interlopers who should not take part in a matter purely involving another party.
Even though Sokoto PDP had announced that they will not challenge the election of Tambuwal in 2015, they however, through case number SC/67/2016, sought to be joined as parties in Dahiru’s suit on the grounds that if it succeeds, Wali should be declared winner of the election.
In a notice of motion for joinder filed at the apex court by EK Ashiekaa SAN, Wali and PDP contended that having participated in the 2015 governorship election, and having scored the next highest number of votes cast after that of Tambuwal, they have sufficient grounds to be joined in the case.
They said the reliefs sought by Dahiru would have an effect on the outcome of the Sokoto governorship election by creating a vacuum.
“That the vacuum likely to be created by the success of the Appellants appeal can only be filled by the applicant who scored the next highest returned votes,” they argued.
Justice Galadima however struck out the application, foreclosing any move by the PDP to get APC removed from power in Sokoto through the back door.
No date yet has been set for hearing on the interlocutory appeal filed by Senator Umar Dahiru challenging the ruling of the Appeal Court which held that his case at the Federal High Court against Tambuwal’s emergence as APC candidate for the April 2015 governorship election could not proceed since it has been overtaken by events and will be a mere academic exercise if it proceeds.

Senate vows to stop allocation to LGs without democratically elected council

The Senate Adhoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has recommended the non payment of Federal Allocation to any local government without democratically elected Council.
This is even as Chairman of Constitution review Committee, Ike Ekweremadu, disclosed at plenary that report of Commi‎ttee is ready for consideration.
Ekweremadu, however, sought‎ the indulgence of the Senate for more time to harmonize with the House of Representatives and present a unified report for ease of consideration.
Part of the recommendation reads: “A uniform three-year tenure for elected local government council officials.
“That Local Governments without a democratically elected council shall not be entitled to any revenue from the Federation Account.
“These amendments amongst others we believe will ensure effective service delivery and insulate local governments from undue and counter-productive interferences from state governments.”
Also, the Committee amended Section 121 of the Constitution to guarantee a first line charge funding of State Houses of Assembly from the consolidated revenue fund of the State.
The Committee also ‎Made it mandatory for the President to attend a Joint Meeting of the National Assembly once a year to deliver a State of the Nation Address.
The committee also changed the names of some local governments.
These include ‎Afikpo North and Afikpo South to Afikpo and Edda respectively.
Also affected are Egbado North and Egbado South to Yewa North and Yewa South.

I can’t rule otherwise if House votes against APC – Dogara tells Abe

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has described as unfair a statement credited to former Senator Magnus Abe that he is working to provide a clear political advantage for the Peoples Democratic Party in the upcoming National Assembly rerun elections in Rivers State.
In a letter addressed to Senator Abe, Dogara said as a loyal party man, he will never work against the interest of his party, the All Progressives Congress.
He said while he does not wish to join issues with Abe, it is important to set the records straight.
According to a statement by his Media Office: “The speaker’s only role in the allegation made by the distinguished senator is that of a presiding officer who brings down the gavel in affirmation of a decision taken by majority members of the House of Representatives.
“Dogara neither introduced the motion to conduct a public hearing on Rivers State election, neither did he support any party during the debate.
“The Speaker wishes to make it clear that he is always fair when presiding over issues raised by members of various parties in the House of Representatives, and this does not equate to discriminating against his own party, the All Progressives Congress.”

Interview With Prof. Joseph Jimoh Owonubi

Prof. Joseph Owonubi
CAB: Can we meet you sir?

Prof Owonubi: I am Professor Joseph Jimoh Owonubi, Agricultural climatologist, Researcher and Academic administrator born on the 5th day of July, 1947 in Egdeda- Kabba, Kabba/Bunu Local government area of Kogi state.

CAB: Sir, can you give a brief history of your journey through the academia?

Prof Owonubi: I attended  St Andrew’s Anglican Primary School, Egbeda-Kabba  from 1954-61, Government College, Zaria from 1962-68, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1969-72; as the Best graduating student in soil science and agricultural engineering , Ahmadu Bello University, 1972, Kansas State University, Kansas, USA 1972-74, Kansas State University, Kansas, 1977-80. I started my academic career as Lecturer-Research Professor, Institute for Agricultural research, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1972-89. Assistant Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1982-84. Leader, Irrigation Research Programme, Institute for Agricultural Research, Zaria 1987-90. Head, Department of soil science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1989-95. Deputy-Director, Institute for Agricultural Research, Samaru-Zaria, 1997-98.

CAB: What are the other experiences you have apart from those you already mentioned sir?

Prof Owonubi: I was a Consultant to the International Service for National Agricultural Research [ISNAR], The Hague, 1998-2003 and the Nigerian National Agricultural Research Projects [NARP] 1993-98; this job secured a counterpart funding grant for the refurbishment of all research institutes in the country to the tune of $110 million although all I received from government was a letter of appreciation but as providence will have it when government needed to resuscitate the comatose Forestry Research Institute in Ibadan, someone remembered the success we recorded then and I was engaged as the Executive Director of the Institute and we be there for eight years serving two tenures of four years each.

CAB: What was the situation you met on ground at the institute?

Prof Owonubi: The situation I met on ground was sordid because infrastructures were dilapidated, staff was despondent with so much leakages and wastage not only in the Headquarters of the Institute but also in the schools and agencies it supervised.

CAB: How were you able to turn the fortunes of the institute around to the path of sustainable growth?

Prof Owonubi: On assumption, I held a meeting with the staff where I gave them the task to do a presentation on how each individual hope to return the institute to the path of greatness and did my own presentation first. Before my resumption, the industrial development unit [IDU] was moribund and I invited a Prince of Ife who studied in England to Head the Unit after agreeing to his demands on remuneration that was almost twice mine but with a caveat that the unit will be self-sustaining. This unit after a short while became the flag ship of the institute by churning out innovating wood products from its stable.

CAB: What are the publications you authored sir?

Prof Owonubi: Co-author, crop science and production in warm climates, 1998 Macmillan

Farmer participation in Irrigation development and management, Institute of Agricultural Research/ Ford Foundation 1990

Farmer managed irrigation system. Ford Foundation/ Institute of Agricultural Research 1993 in addition are more than 100 publications in local and international journals.

CAB: What have you been doing since retirement?

Prof Owonubi: Established AquaScience Based Resources [ABR] Farm as

1. An experimental mixed farm project combining wasteland recovery, horticultural crops, fishery, poultry, sheep and goats rearing

2. Training point for IT students from tertiary institutions; UI, FUTA, LAUTECH, FCF etc. began 2010 till date

3. Community farming extension services

4. Non-political community peace project, Iletitun-Alafara Communities of Ido local government area, Oyo state and Okuns of Kogi state.

CAB: In what ways have you impacted on the lives of people especially, Okun sons and daughters in your years as an academic administrator?

Prof Owonubi: God has used me to facilitate admission for many and they are doing well in their various fields of human endeavors. As the Executive Director of Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, God used me to make two Okun sons, Provosts of two of the colleges under the Institute.

CAB: At what point did you get involved in groups in formed for the advancement of the collective interest of Okunland?

Prof Owonubi: Since my years as an undergraduate, I engaged in student activism at the level of Kabba Students’ Union and later was Secretary of Oyi Indigenes then in Zaria. This particular period availed me the opportunity to visit several communities across Okunland. Presently, I am the Vice-President of Okun Development Association and have been for over six years.

CAB: It is strange that you have been involved this long in Okun affairs and some people still regard you as Okun in Diaspora though you are resident in Nigeria and will want others to believe same?

Prof Owonubi: I am basically a team player first and prefer collective success to personal glory and won’t be surprised if some people have that kind of perception; in fact if people are straining to hear my name at this level, it is not abnormal. I am a planner, teacher and researcher and in other areas a consultant and administrator Though the past six years have been largely uneventful with regards to ODA playing its role as the voice, vision and conscience of Okun people, but with the patriotic resurgence of various groups committed to the upliftment of Okunland the years ahead can only be better especially with the successful convocation of the maiden Okun summit.

CAB: What measures do you think can be put in place to turn around the fortunes of Okun Development Association for good to enable it function maximally for the benefit of Okun people?

Prof Owonubi: Okun Development Association [ODA] needs overhauling administratively and financially; structures need to be put in place to make a people-oriented organization away from its present elitist disposition; down to the community level.  Its activities should adopt the bottom-top model to enable the participation of Okun sons and daughters. It is only when we have a good structure in place that any hope of moving forward on the road to greatness is feasible. The local government system as presently run is faced with a lot of challenges particularly the paucity of funds and programs should be fashioned in a manner that the local councils and even the state government will key into it for the benefit of our people.

CAB: What is your take on the present socio-economic situation in Okunland?

Prof Owonubi: When a people are unable to feed or favourably compete for employment, they are already enslaved. Our foundation has been degraded by poverty and this must not be allowed to persist. Let us collectively push/assist those wearing our presently feeble political muscles to work on this for posterity. We must identify and work on areas of strength especially those that unite us for the benefit of all.

CAB: What is the AquaScience Based Resources [ABR] Farm about?

Prof Owonubi: It is an experimental mixed farm project combining wasteland recovery, horticultural crops, fishery, poultry, sheep and goats rearing that is also a training point for IT students from tertiary institutions in the country apart from the community extension service it provides.

CAB: What do you do at your leisure time sir?

Prof Owonubi: My hobbies are football, table tennis and gardening.

CAB: What is the outlook in the home front sir?

Prof Owonubi: I am happily married to Florence Onome Onafurume and we are blessed with six children; five boys and one beautiful daughter.

CAB: What do you have to say on a final note for now sir?

Prof Owonubi: Okunland is abundantly blessed in human and natural resources and all we need to achieve greatness is to harness these potentials in a committed selfless manner to the glory of God and benefit of Okuns in the present and the future.

Pilot said Brazil plane was out of fuel before deadly crash

A recording has emerged of the pilot of the doomed Brazilian plane saying he had run out of fuel, reports say.
Seventy-one people died when the aircraft crashed in a mountainous area in Colombia, including most of the Chapecoense football team and 20 Brazilian journalists on board.
There were six survivors – three players, two Bolivian crew members and a journalist.
The pilot radioed that he was running out of fuel and needed to make an emergency landing, according to the co-pilot of another plane in the area.
One of the footballers, goalkeeper Jackson Follman, has undergone surgery to have his right leg amputated and is now recovering.
Defender Helio Neto is being treated in intensive care after suffering severe trauma to his skull, thorax and lungs.
His fellow defender, Alan Ruschel, has undergone spinal surgery.
The three other survivors were Brazilian journalist Rafael Valmorbida, air stewardess Ximena Suarez and flight technician Erwin Tumiri.
The plane, which departed from Santa Cruz in Bolivia, was carrying the side – based in Chapeco in southern Brazil – to Colombia for the biggest game in the club’s history.
They had been due to play in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Medellin’s Atletico Nacional on Wednesday.
The British Aerospace 146 came down as it approached Colombia’s second-largest city, Medellin.
Two “black box” flight recorders have been recovered from the crash site on a hillside near the town of La Union.
One local resident said the aircraft appeared to have lost power.
Nancy Munoz, who grows strawberries in the area, said: “It came over my house, but there was no noise, the engine must have gone.”
A Colombian military source earlier told the AFP news agency that the plane may have run out of fuel.
The source said: “It is very suspicious that despite the impact there was no explosion. That reinforces the theory of the lack of fuel.”
